Membership, or "Oh So Much Better Than Officership"

As a member, I get to be honest and blunt. Officers don't. Officers have to weigh their words delicately to avoid upsetting folk and don't always get to say exactly what they think.

When you're an officer, all your words have repercussions.

As a member, I get to say things like "[some] things aren't possible [to accommodate], and you have to decide if you're going to seek alternate ways to fulfill your game goals or just sit and complain about not getting what you want until people get tired of hearing it and tell you to shut up (oh, wait, everyone in IVV is too passive-aggressive to do that)."

I don't know why I'd ever want to go back to censoring everything I say. I just like being able to say what I think needs to be said without the mess of authority and politics.

  1. Political Correctness is for chumps and politicians who don't have the balls to call things the way they are.

  2. Maybe I'm just old . . . but back when I was a kid, we didn't call it "political correctness". It was just "being polite". "PC" didn't become a bad thing until a certain sensationalist airbag wanted to stir up a fight on his radio show.

Of course, there have always been blunt people. There are certainly times when it's appropriate to call someone out. There are times when a blunt instrument is the right one. And, like Birdfall points out, there are positions you can be in that make it more acceptible. The whole anti-PC thing just really gets my goat, though. Sorry. Stepping away from the soap box.

  3. Delicacy is best at times. Other times, the people you're talking to don't necessarily catch on when you say things delicately.

So each way has its appropriate time.

  4. *sighs*

I tend to be very polite. But when I get 'shushed' for using words like, 'black' or 'mexican'.

That's what people are. African Americans haven't really existed in American for a couple centuries now. This was a point proven by a South African woman who moved here, and when a Black man said he was African American too, she said the following:

"No sir. You are an American because you were born here. I am an African American because I was born in South Africa and moved here."

That's the 'Political Correctness' that I'm talking about.
